Summary

Novel inspired by the English naturalist and traveler Julius Lucius Brenchley, who sets sail for South America aboard the schooner Gloriana. After an extraordinary storm diverts the expedition toward Patagonia, the ship becomes stranded on a frozen lake in the Andes. While Brenchley remains aboard, his valet Cruikshank ventures into the mountains and encounters the legendary Patagonian giants. Combining adventure, irony, and fantasy, the novel functions as both homage to and parody of nineteenth-century exploration narratives while reflecting on chance, time, travel, and the mechanisms of storytelling.
